The Dutch project ‘Energy factory’ was awarded the Green Pearl Award 2009. The project is an initiatieve of the water controlling gouvernmental bodies in The Netherlands. President of the judging committe Jan Rotmans, professor Sustainable Transition & System Innovation Erasmus Universiteit stated: “The Energy factory is an example of an organisation that steps out of is regular rol in a process and steps forward to achieve its sustainability ambitions.”
The Green Pearl award is given to stimulate projects aimed to improve sustainability in regional and local gouvernmental bodies. The winning project representes the ambitions of watercontroling gouvernment to improve the energy performance of water treatment installations. These installations can be transformed into units that produce energy, not only consume it.
Waste water contains energy. Within the Energy factory the water controlling gouvernments work together to explore the possibilities to generate energy from waste water at different locations. If all the energy in waste water could be tranfered into energy, this would be sufficient to supply the city of Rotterdam with energy, and more than enough to supply all the waste water treatment units with the necessary energy to run the. The project is still at the development stage, but first draws of plans have already been made.
